Secondary Distinctives ...
Western Heritage provides a broad coverage
of the background to our civilisation. It includes stories
from history and encourages students to think about the issues
of life in a way relevant to the studies of teenagers. This
is reflected in literature, history, geography, science, music
and art. Heritage provides students with a working knowledge
of the great ideas and the moral foundations of our culture,
and presents many examples of men and women of courage, enterprise
and faith who become models for developing young people.
The Research Project is an especially important
challenge for all year 7-10 students to carry out a major project
of their own under teacher supervision. It trains independent
learning including skills in research, expressing information,
goal setting, self-monitoring, cooperative learning and ability
to plan and manage work over a significant period. It allows
students to choose and follow up their own personal interest
within the school program, and there are some highly innovative
results!
Year 9 and 10 Electives (See Secondary Courses and Options). The school offers
a surprisingly wide range of electives at Years 9 and 10,
to cater for the student vocational goals as well as personal
interests. Students participate in around six optional subjects
during the year, from the list provided.
Technology in the school covers a range of
selections. Information technology is a strong emphasis, along
with the electronics, home economics, woodwork and metalwork,
textiles and ceramics are current offerings. Some of these
subjects can lead into higher programs at Year 11 and 12.
Human Studies is a year 9 and 10 course providing
a background for students who wish to enter professions such
as teaching, nursing, childcare, sport oriented work, business
etc. It also provides a broad introduction to the social science
subjects such as psychology and sociology. By engaging teenage
minds on relevant topics, this is a great opportunity to introduce
them to some of the most challenging ethical and social ideas
of the modern culture within a Christian format.
Insights. All students in Years 8 through
10 participate in our "Insights" seminars, giving
30 minute weekly challenges to students' thinking from the
Christian point of view. We encourage students' sense of
ownership and commitment to achieve well in every school
subject they study, motivating them through a growing sense
of authentic purpose and excitement as they discover God's
plan for human knowledge.
